Flat: Alfama 4 (3663/AL)
Ideally situated in the middle of the Alfama district this is a recently renovated appartment in an historical building, with restaurants and coffee bars within a few yards, but no street noise to keep you awake at night thanks to double glazing. We were there in March so in the summer you may have to depend on the thick walls to keep cool, as there is no airco. Nor is there a TV, which we didn't miss at all. The furnishing is mostly Ikea with restraint and some taste and on the whole very pleasant. Special mention deserves the spic and span brand new kitchen, which has all appliances you need, such as fridge, freezer, range, oven, microwave, dish washer, washing machine, coffee maker, etc, etc. Another bonus is the balcony at the back where you can send your smokers and which has a nice view. For those interested: the beds were rated excellent by us (four persons around 60 with very different build), as were the (two) bathrooms. The agent, Màrio Caldeira, is very helpful and courteous and speaks English very well. Definitely a place to come back to.

The apartment had everything we needed -- space for our things in the bedroom and kitchen, a good table for meals, a place to relax in the living room, and an extra room where we set up our laptop. The location couldn't be better. It's near all kinds of transportation, and right in the middle of lots of Lisbon places one wants to go to. We walked almost everywhere (Gulbenkian Museum, Castelo Sao Jorge, even Belem) as well as took buses and trains. It was an easy walk to the Saturday organic farmers market, which was a real treat, especially having a good kitchen to prepare food. Mario was immediately responsive and helpful.

Cosy place in beautiful Alfama
We really fell in love this little place. Be warned -- it is small, but the layout is designed well & has all the amenities you would need. It was very quaint & cosy. Having the 2nd floor space made it feel a lot bigger. With the windows open it gets great light. I'm 5'7" and my partner is 6'2". Standing in the shower was a tight fit for me, ceiling was only 2-3 inches above my head. My partner had to duck down a little to fit. But the shower pressure was great!!
It's located right around the corner from the entrance to Sao Jorge Castle. It was fun being able to stay within the castle walls. During the day, the area is very touristy & gets pretty busy -- but at night the area is very peaceful & quiet. We fell in love with the Alfama district and neighboring Mouraria. So many great restaurants & cute bars in the area -- check out Chapito for amazing sunset views. Leopold was another modern gourmet restaurant in the castle walls nearby. We took a Lisbon Food Tour, which took us to several amazing restaurants in the nearby Mouraria area...Catinho do Aziz (Mozambique restaurant - BEST samosas in town!) , The Food Temple (recommended by our tour guide as the best vegetarian restaurant in town), Gelato Davvero (AMAZING gelato!).
If you wish to leave Alfama -- it's about a 15-20 minute walk to get down to the bottom of the hill to downtown areas. Be warned, there are a lot of uphill climbs & stairs, but we didn't mind the exercise. There were several beautiful viewpoints within 5-10 min walking distance from the apartment. After exploring several of the other areas around town -- we ended up loving the Alfama & Mouraria the most. We preferred it over the drunken madness that took place in the Bairro Alto ;)
I would highly recommend this place to anyway, as long as they don't mind the smaller space. Mario was very quick with his communication & provided good tips for places to check out in the area. Thanks Mario! We'd definitely come back to stay here again.

This place is wonderful! It is a cozy little apartment right near the entrance to the Castle and is an easy (although hilly, like all of Lisbon) walk to the rest of the city. the neighborhood is authentic and charming and there are many good restaurants nearby. The host is great, he waited for us even though our train was delayed 30 minutes and was helpful in telling us about places to eat and about Lisbon. As the description says the apartment is two floors so you can have some privacy and do not feel too cramped. As the posting says it is a little place, I am just at 6' ft and my head almost touched the top of the shower ceiling and the stairs were very small, It was not a problem but just be aware that as the description says it is small. However its central location and the how great the pace is make this apartment a great place to stay! Highly recommend!
